A large-scale search and recovery operation is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of missing sailboats carrying aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the missing boats, which were had on board at least nine total crew members, per a military release.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their arrival, the statement clarified.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple power outages across the country.

"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort commented.

The nine crew members are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Previous Relief Shipment

Previously that week, the government in Havana publicly celebrated and officially received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and provisions.

Larger International Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation began.

International organizations have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from several officials highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to previous proposals, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that initial phases of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy stated it was committed to using every available asset at its command to discover the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
