A confidential source has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities abandoned confidential devices allowing Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Data Breach Puts Thousands in Danger

The source, called Person A, explained that people concerned by the information breach were instructed to move homes and alter their contact details to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are investigating the UK government's management of a massive breach of private information affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to come to the UK to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Happened

A data file including their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and occasionally family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at special operations center in February 2022.

The breach became known months later, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in the UK appeared on social media.

Taliban Capabilities

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that the Taliban are without similar capabilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. Should they obtain your phone number, they can trace you down to within metres. That's precisely what intelligence groups did.”

When questioned about whether the Taliban owned advanced decryption, the whistleblower confirmed: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Preliminary research presented to the inquiry suggested that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was implemented in late 2023 and blocked all details concerning it from being made public until recently.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the source and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence if they could and altered their phone numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired such data, would cause their location being found,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower disputed that an official review carried out by a retired civil servant had been wrong to determine that the possession of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are in hiding from militant forces; they live secretly. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

She detailed horrific abuse suffered by concerned people, comprising electrocution, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“Instances include young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get relatives to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
