This Sunday, the Central African Republic will undertake a pivotal quadruple election, including the presidency, parliament, and local seats.

A Crowded Race for the Presidency

Seven candidates are competing for the top office, among them ex-premiers Anicet Georges Dologuélé and Henri-Marie Dondra. Both men were given approval to stand by the constitutional court after being initially barred. Dologuélé finished second in the 2015 and 2020 votes, while Dondra had a short tenure under the current president.

Challengers' Strategy and Public Discontent

The challengers hopes to capitalize on widespread discontent in a country where violence remains a constant threat. More than half a million people are displaced within their own country, with a comparable figure living as exiles in neighbouring countries.

"This is an chance to acknowledge the remarkable recovery of the nation," noted a UN regional official, though he added that obstacles remain.

Touadéra's Expected Victory

Despite the challenges, President Faustin-Archange Touadéra, a one-time academic, is largely predicted to secure another term. He first entered politics in 2008 when named prime minister, holding the post until a rebel coalition toppled the government in 2013, sparking a sectarian conflict.

After a turbulent three-year interim, his perceived impartiality from the warring factions powered his second-round victory in 2016.

Security Concerns and Voting Challenges

Concerns persist that supply-chain issues and insecurity could mar the vote, particularly in rural areas. The UN stabilization force, Minusca, is offering security and organizational aid that the state's crumbling infrastructure cannot manage.

Additional problems include the voter list being made available only digitally, a significant barrier in a nation with scarce online access. These issues have prompted an opposition boycott and could, as noted by analysts, "exclude many of the electorate."

Implications of Extended Rule

Many citizens fear that another term for Touadéra—made possible by a 2023 constitutional referendum that abolished term limits and extended mandates—would mean greater influence for outside interests.

The president has put faith in the private military group Wagner for his protection, and even after its founder's death, has resisted calls to integrate its fighters into a successor entity. Meanwhile, Rwanda has taken a different approach, focusing on commercial ventures within CAR.

Allegations of Asset Sales

Recent reports have stated the administration removed its own soldiers from a World Bank-funded facility to make way for a foreign-run agricultural project. A critical editorial accused the leadership of being "intent on dispose of the nation piece by piece."

Amid a newly signed agreement with armed factions offering hope of stabilization, the vote proceeds under a cloud of uncertainty and geopolitical rivalry.
