Critical Role Campaign 4 Reveals the Soldiers Party

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in strength within the city.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The latest chapter finished on a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of heroes who will branch out from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team consists of Teor (portrayed by the voice actor), Thimble (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the combat-focused party is for participants who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are rare.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group knows exactly where to head next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death started the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, breaking into the secret base, assaulting the character, and taking all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • The adventurer has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to kill the target and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could enable the group enter places they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • Tyranny and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to travel to Timmony in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Questers and Planners tables.

Fans can expect finding out which players will be in which group in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on October 24.
