Disney's Live-Action <em>Moana</em> Trailer Appears Remarkably Similar to a Cartoon
The first preview for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana has been released. Is it surprising that, like many of Disney's live-action remakes, it appears a lot like an cartoon and much less like a true film with real actors?
Spectacular Visuals That Keep an Animated Feel
The preview for the new version of Moana is undeniably spectacular. It features sweeping scenery, gorgeous soundtrack, and well-known characters. However, it also appears like an cartoon. The over-the-top visuals depict figures soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui transforming into both a bug and a bird. All of this is accomplished through digital effects and CGI. Much like earlier Disney remakes—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of animation is so extensive that it raises the question: what makes these films “real-life” other than the marketing term?
Narrative and Music Fans Adore
Regardless, this new Moana seems to be a reimagining of the original story, complete with new renditions of the beloved musical numbers. As described in an released synopsis, “Moana heeds the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an memorable journey to restore prosperity to her people.”
Fresh Performers and Familiar Faces
At the same time, the teaser features a sample of the updated version on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actress is stepping into the role of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who portrayed the heroine in the first films.
One person who hasn’t been replaced is Dwayne Johnson, who will again be playing Maui. Of course, that character already looked like Johnson, so casting him in the live-action version seems reasonable.
Beloved Mascot Makes an Appearance
Perhaps the highlight part of the preview comes in the last scene. Moana's favorite chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, squawking at the camera. How else to introduce the movie’s true icon?
