Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

This term is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a minor who has lost their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal in numerous doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and international watchdogs assert that atrocities are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, just as it refutes each claim it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, apparently, is what international harmony resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an bid to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision turns 70 next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that once promoted togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
