Giants QB Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not shocked...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL found that the Saints had rewarded players for making aggressive tackles on opponents. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's remarkable comeback win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a five-year, $245 million extension.
- The Broncos finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team hired Payton, who was returning to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton benched Wilson 15 games into the 2023 season, a decision that prevented the quarterback from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson stayed on the roster by spring 2024, his $37 million pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. In the end, Wilson was let go, marking the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
