More than 60,000 Run from Sudanese City After Takeover by RSF Paramilitary Group, United Nations States

As stated by the United Nations refugee organization, over 60,000 civilians have fled the Sudanese city of el-Fasher, which was seized by the paramilitary RSF recently.

There have been summary killings and human rights violations as RSF fighters took control of the city after an 18-month blockade marked by starvation and sustained attacks.

The movement of those running from the conflict towards the community of Tawila, about 80km (50 miles) west of el-Fasher, had grown in the recent days, per UNHCR spokesperson.

Refugees were narrating horrendous tales of atrocities, including rape, and the humanitarian group was finding it difficult to locate adequate accommodation and food for them.

Each child was suffering from nutritional deficiencies, she noted.

It is estimated that in excess of 150,000 residents are still unable to leave in el-Fasher, which had been the army's last bastion in the western region of Darfur.

The RSF has denied extensive claims that the executions in el-Fasher are based on ethnic factors and mirror a trend of the Arab paramilitaries targeting non-Arab populations.

However the RSF has arrested one of its members, Abu Lulu, who has been accused of extrajudicial killings.

The organization released footage depicting the member's apprehension following confirmation that he was involved in the execution of numerous non-combatants near el-Fasher.

Digital platform has verified that it has removed the channel connected to Lulu. Uncertainty exists whether he had managed the account in his name.

Sudan was entered a internal conflict in April 2023 following a vicious power struggle erupted between its army and the RSF.

The conflict has caused a famine and accusations of mass killing in the Darfur area.

Over 150,000 people have lost their lives in the war across the country, and roughly 12 million have abandoned their homes in what the UN has called the biggest global humanitarian crisis.

The takeover of el-Fasher reinforces the regional separation in the country, with the Rapid Support Forces now in dominance of western Sudan and significant areas of bordering Kordofan to the southern area, and the military controlling the capital, Khartoum, central and eastern areas along the Red Sea.

The opposing sides had been partners - taking over together in a seizure of power in 2021 - but fell out over an globally supported proposal to advance to civilian leadership.
