Weather experts are saying a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to proceed, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be low, so warm wraps essential, said forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for watching fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.

The Mercury Set to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to batter the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Alerts Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials said this indicated the weather was likely to trigger major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
