The courageous student threw back a grenade from militant forces before being captured in the attack on Israel in the recent conflict, states the other Nepalese student he saved.

"My survival would not have endured if the two grenades had detonated. He showed bravery and hurled the device away," the survivor disclosed to media outlets.

He was speaking after the defense forces confirmed his friend's body as being among four dead hostages returned by Hamas under the Gaza ceasefire accord.

The young student was twenty-three and working on a agricultural community when he was taken by Hamas into imprisonment along with numerous individuals on 7 October 2023. It's unknown how or when he passed away.

His family and friends hoped right up to the negotiation cutoff that he could be among living captives released on 13 October, but he wasn't, and a subsequent day their worst fears were confirmed.

The Attack

Bipin, his friend and 15 other Nepalese farming students had been in Israel for just over three weeks when Kibbutz Alumim was assaulted.

"The students were aware that there could be a war in Israel. But we had no idea that there may be any ground attack of that scale," the survivor said. "We thought that there could be missile attacks and we would be safe if we stay below ground, in the bunkers."

For the students who'd been invited under the national "Earn and Learn Programme" it was a great chance to make better lives for themselves and their families in Nepal.

The survivor attributes his survival to his friend's courage.

"At the time of the assault, multiple explosives were thrown near the bunkers. He [Bipin] picked up a device and hurled it outside; one detonated within. Due to that blast, myself and four others were wounded," he recalls.

"He was unharmed at that moment. If the two grenades had detonated, I would not have been speaking with you like this."

Ten of the Nepalese individuals were killed in the assault. Bipin was the only one taken hostage.

"The friends met for the final occasion when Bipin and others were being shifted to another shelter," the survivor says. "Since, after the injury, was immobile and remained stayed in the first bunker. I discovered that there were multiple assaults in the shelter where Bipin took shelter and was was taken prisoner from that location."

Remembering Bipin

The 27-year-old says he experiences deeply saddened after hearing about his colleague's death. He and Bipin were classmates in their educational institution in their hometown, Nepal.

"His friends made every attempts from our sides to ensure his release. We did everything. But recently, we had to face such shocking news. The entire nation is in mourning. Personally do not know what to say. I have limited expression to describe my sadness."

Dhan Bahadur says his friend and fellow students had the identical aspiration of making modest savings and establishing their own enterprise after returning from the educational opportunity in Israel.

"He loved participating in soccer and sports. We would converse for hours about our ambitions and dreams. My friend desired to get his physique in excellent condition and to purchase a latest mobile phone. Together even created a song about companionship with a phone. Bipin also talked about presenting himself in a music video."

Recent Developments

On 14 October, the Israeli military stated they suspected Bipin Joshi was "killed in detention during the initial period of the conflict". There exists no way of independently confirming that.

But should this be the situation, the survivor commented, the global authorities should ask Hamas about why it occurred.

The survivor said he had not received any assistance from Nepal's government following his injury but hoped the Israeli government would help his friend's family.

Bipin's close relatives have withheld any statement to date.

Footage from the attack date showed him moving inside a medical facility in Gaza City. The family received no signs of life for a twelve months, until the Israeli military released a video of him in captivity around that period.

Relatives described the material as "proof of life" just hours before the truce agreement was finalized, and were praying for a positive outcome.

Currently in his hometown of Bhimdutta municipality the student's family are mourning after hearing news of his passing.

Family Situation

The student's female relatives had gone to the US to advocate for the release of hostages, Bipin's cousin Kishore Joshi told news sources.

The relative says the household has limited expression to describe the grief. "Bipin's mother and sister are coming back from America on Thursday. The parent is unable to articulate the pain in words."

Meanwhile it's unclear when Bipin's body will be returned to his family.

The nation is making required preparations to return his body to Nepal, as it completed for the remaining students who perished, the country's government department announced.
