Prisons Cannot Be Resolved Immediately, Government Official Says, while Police Search For Two Men Incorrectly Freed
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has described the circumstances as a "total shambles," speaking this morning.
Appearing on a radio program, he referenced remarks made by the justice minister following a previous inmate discharge, saying that Lammy would establish more robust verifications.
"It took six days for the prison service supposedly to realize this occurred" and notify the police, Jenrick explains, "who are now a week late in the manhunt to locate him."
The opposition figure condemns the minister's handling during yesterday's PMQs and alleges him of a "total dereliction of duty."
Speaking about mistaken prison releases more generally, the spokesperson underlines that "each accidental discharge [...] is unacceptable."
He acknowledges there were similar incidents under the previous administration, but claims the figure "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Calling for more prisons to be constructed, he adds: "The public expect now are adequate safeguards implemented."
"This represents a specific administrative failure by the Ministry of Justice overseen by the minister," Jenrick says.
