Senegal's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “humility” and superb skills. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
