According to new research, UK officials met with representatives from the fossil fuel industry more than 500 times during their initial year in power – equivalent to double per business day.

The study found that fossil fuel lobbyists were participating in 48% extra official discussions under the existing leadership's first year compared to the prior year.

The government justified the engagements, claiming that ministers held meetings with a broad spectrum of representatives from "power industry, worker groups and community groups to propel our renewable energy superpower mission".

Yet, the discoveries have generated worry among analysts about the degree of the oil and gas sector's sway over government at a time when officials are attempting to lower bills and move to a greener energy system.

• Ministers at the Net Zero Ministry met with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with corporate delegates present at nearly 25% of sessions.

• The climate official held discussions with petroleum sector advocates 250 times – with a third of each discussion attended by sector representatives.

An ecological representative commented: "Rather than heeding scientists, residents impacted by flooding, or guardians eager to guarantee a safe future for their descendants, this government is favoring corporate representatives and earnings for large energy corporations."

Official Denial

The government insisted the findings were "misleading", saying several of the companies listed also had sustainable power initiatives and that these were typically the main topic of the meetings.

"Our priority is a just, orderly and thriving change in the North Sea in line with our ecological and legal requirements, and we are working with the industry to protect present and coming generations of good jobs."

Broader Context

Multiple prominent petroleum industry giants have been censured for cutting their sustainable funding in the past few years amid a global pushback against climate action.

A campaigns manager from an ecological advocacy project remarked: "The government pledged a government of service, but that doesn't mean bowing the knee to corporations profiting out of ecological disaster. It's essential to cease favoring climate-damaging entities and focus on the public."
