A group of six unlikely but doughty youngsters encounter the way of a colossal and fearsome otherworldly darkness that has invaded our realm from the deepest abyss of shadow. They must wage a lifelong battle fighting it, experiencing horror after horror in the struggle.

An Echoing Storyline with a Fresh Spin

This describes the premise, broadly speaking, of the master of horror’s seminal work It (a standout in his career; undeniable). It similarly frames of Stephen King’s offspring Joseph Hillstrom King’s new horror doorstopper, in which a band of six invoke the primordial, infinitely malicious serpent the Sorrowful Monarch from the Abyssal Void to assist them in vanquishing some antagonists. As one might expect, their supernatural ritual goes awry.

Celebrating a Literary Legacy

Joseph Hillström King started his career making great efforts to avoid any connection from his renowned parent, publishing under the pen name he continues to employ and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he possesses a uncanny likeness to his parent). However, in his newest work, he leans into it. Certain passages that intentionally mirror some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that evokes a signature King element (a game of puzzles). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his lineage, and the audience revels alongside.

Meet the Central Figures

Returning to the group: five of them are scholars at the fictional Rackham College in this northeastern locale. We have Arthur, academic and gifted, solving historical enigmas in his spare time; another key figure, affluent, sharp, and known for crushing anyone who stands in his way; twins Donna and Donovan; the attractive Allie. Then we have Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but becomes a key part of their group as they experiment, half believing, partly skeptical, in the occult.

The Critical Summoning

The protagonist finds himself, as a result of external pressures, forced into stealing valuable volumes from his cherished academic collection by a group of neighborhood thugs. This tears at his bookish heart, particularly as he’s compelled to seize the institution’s prized and chilling publication: the journal of practitioner the historical figure (condemned “for trafficking with the devyll in 1703”; the book’s jacket is crafted from his flesh). The intrepid group peruse the diary, discover they could summon what the author references as a cunning serpent to aid our hero with his coercion issue – and devote the remaining story reaping the consequences. King Sorrow will certainly eliminate those problematic neighborhood criminals, but they must select a different victim every twelve months or become his victim themselves. As Arthur later puts it: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is additional horrors.”

Narrative Versatility and Inventive Scope

Covering a generation, Joe Hill transitions with seamless grace across narrative styles: as the companions endeavor to address the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or seeking means to kill the dragon themselves, we go from thriller to dark fantasy, black-ops torture to love story to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a adventure narrative, deep in the caves under the English county, a segment infused with JRR Tolkien that was magnificently horrifying.

A Rich Mosaic of Fear and Hope

The novel features trolls – the classic variety and internet antagonists, genuinely frightening and perfectly brought to life. There are magical swords and treacheries, pulse-pounding sequences of bravery and ones of appalling malevolence, both human and supernatural. It’s a tour de force: a chilling book that is primarily a ode to the creative spirit, and to love and friendship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the companions assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their beast to life with the strength of their collective will.

As Hill puts it in his epigraph: “This is dragon territory”. Do not overlook this.
