The Grisly Cartoon Movie Ending That Stays With Fans
Among every adult-oriented animated films I have ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the fear-filled conclusion of the explicitly bloody and overwhelingly transgressive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director created a grim, melancholy and often savage universe with several minor , forlorn hints of hope.
Although Unicorn Wars appears as it came from an impulse to push the medium even more, the director clarified that it was actually an attempt to communicate a widespread, multicultural theme about “the shared root of every conflict.”
That idea is communicated by means of a group of colorful pastel bears , openly modeled after a famous series of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a culture built around aggression and the war machine, many of these creatures are fixated on killing the mythical beasts, because of a religious scripture that tells them they were once masters of the forest, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely accepted the brainwashing, , choose to sample substances or fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their friendly equivalents, these bright beings display genitals and clear urges.
For a certain especially vicious, pessimistic creature, the character Bluey, the battle with unicorns transforms into a route to power — and especially to authority over his gentler, nicer brother Tubby.
The character is a bully , a seeming antisocial figure , and while horror dominates his squad and kills his teammates one by one, he seizes progressively control on his own behalf, through ever more gory, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are experiencing their own nightmare, as an expanding, harmful creature in their forest.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the director said. “However it becomes a more intense and sorrowful film. And ultimately, it becomes a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling among the playful movies by a legendary animator, that discover a wicked pleasure in letting cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Then it turns into closer to a bleaker movie by that same director, with increasingly explicit brutality , a palpable relation to the actual tragedy of conflict.
Ultimately, it’s an outright Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The horror that makes the film a Halloween-friendly watch starts much sooner than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who wish to watch something they haven’t ever viewed until now, and are able to withstand a plot that offers unflinching brutality.
See it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the finale will crawl under your skin and linger.
