The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
