The people of Israel observe two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace talks advance
Citizens have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The attack saw in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the agreement.
A high-ranking representative involved in the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official stated the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Points in Talks
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war administration of the area
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the gathering, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until every captive are released none of us will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
Outside the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist one woman explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Research now consistently show that approximately the majority of the population prefer the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the gathering, mourners gathered to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone areas and in the eastern area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area reported two more fatalities had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south region, medics reported.
