A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind helped us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a nearby residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
