What We Know About the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.
Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the victims who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
