While Swimmers Ran From Attack, Popular Image Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, describes the iconic shoreline as her back yard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, detected pops reverberating through the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she saw people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she noticed someone coming up at her rear. This turned out to be a beach patrol officer, sprinting to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a medical device.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one running in the direction that everyone was trying to get away from, and hauling that big kit and unshod … He moved at something that certainly every part of you would signal you to move in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just fully maximum effort sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with other rescuers, officers and paramedics attending to numerous victims.

Community Response and Solidarity

Doolan’s story was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the site of the attack serving as a makeshift treatment center. Accounts show that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to rescue people in distress.

Following the tragedy, messages of appreciation flooded in. One post expressed appreciation for the individuals who exhibited that “goodness will always conquer evil”.

The squad of beach patrol published a statement, noting they were “processing what occurred”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are touched by the compassion for our responders,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the team performed exceptionally from the second the violence started through to late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many moving accounts, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is incredible,” said a local official.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in ensuring our internationally renowned coastlines safe for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much positivity we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
