Zohran Mamdani states his intention to reside in the iconic Gracie Mansion
The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly after his triumph in November.
"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to focusing my full attention on carrying out the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant communities and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he is from a famous family.
A House Not Always Used
Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for public city functions, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the price of rent exceeds the means of many residents.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
